Feature Follow Friday: Favorite Character Death Scene

Every Friday Parajunkee and Alison Can Read hosts Feature Follow Friday. It's a great way to get to know the blogging community and they ask fun questions!

This week's Question is:

Describe your favorite book character death scene. Why is it your favorite? Was it a villain or a hero? What made it so good?

*****SPOILER ALERT!*****

If you haven't read Days of Blood and Starlight, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, or Percy Jackson The Last Olympian then there are SPOILERS!

*****SPOILER ALERT!*****

I don't have a "favorite" death scene since I'm always irrationally sad when fictional character I love die.

So I will answer this question two ways:

1. "What book death scene caused you to be forever changed because it was both totally devastating and still beautifully written."

2. "What villain death scene was fairly satisfying because really that character had to die in order for everyone else to live happily ever after."

So here we go, the death scene that I thought was probably best written:

Hazael dying in Days of Blood and Starlight. He was such a great character and he was the person who anchored Akiva and Liraz to their humanity...and then he DIED! *sobs uncontrollably*

Excerpt:
"[Hazael] stumbled, looked at Akiva, then down at the sword. He let go of his own...he crumpled, and Akiva saw it all through the flare of clarity he had been desperate for...Hazael fell. Liraz threw herself to her knees to catch him. Akiva experience in splendid light the howl that shaped his sister's mouth. He heard her banshee grief and saw it, too. Sound had form, it was light, everything was light, and everything was grief, and Liraz was trying to hold Hazael's head as his eyes glazed, but a pair of Dominion grabbed her, dragged her, and Hazael's head fell. Akiva knew his brother was dead even before his head hit tile..."
My favorite villain death scene was:

Voldemort's death from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Come on, you have to admit that Voldemort HAD to die. There was no other way for the series to end. Also, he had been given so many chances for redemption over the course of his life and he squandered them all. Even the sad stories about his bad childhood weren't enough to justify all of the evil horribleness he did. He was a Hitler Wizard. He was Witler.

As I was writing this post I figured out a death scene that was kind of poignant and appropriate. And it was...

When Luke dies in Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian

He was the bad guy for the whole series because he helped Kronos rise up and plotted against the gods. But in the end he was a hero and his death was important because it gave him redemption and saved the world in the process. It was a pretty good death if you have to have one and it had a higher purpose. I like when the death of a character is more than a tear-jerking gimmick.

Excerpt:

It was silent for a long time.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Luke sprawled at the hearth. On the floor around him was a blackened circle of ash...
"Good...blade," he croaked.
I knelt next to him. Annabeth limped over with Grover's support. They both had tears in their eyes.
Luke gaze at Annabeth. "You knew. I almost killed you, but you knew..."
"Shhh." Her voice trembled. "You were a hero at the end, Luke. You'll go to Elysium."

The Broke and the Bookish host a weekly meme of Top Ten Lists.

This week's question is:

Publication Date: Feb 24, 2015
Kell is one of the last Travelers—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes—as such, he can choose where he lands.
There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne—a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see—a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, who first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…
It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.
Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.
But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.
Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

It’s been nearly two decades since the Red Allies first attacked New York, and Manhattan is now a prisoner-of-war camp, ruled by Warden Rolladin and her brutal, impulsive warlords. For 17-year-old Skyler Miller, Manhattan is a cage that keeps her from the world beyond the city’s borders. But for Sky’s 16-year-old sister, Phee, the P.O.W. camp is a dangerous playground of possibility, and the only home she’d ever want.
When Sky and Phee discover their mom’s hidden journal from the outbreak of the war, they both realize there’s more to Manhattan—and their mother—than either of them had ever imagined. And after a group of strangers arrives at the annual P.O.W. census, the girls begin to uncover the island’s long-kept secrets. The strangers hail from England, a country supposedly destroyed by the Red Allies, and Rolladin’s lies about Manhattan’s captivity begin to unravel.
Hungry for the truth, the sisters set a series of events in motion that ends in the death of one of Rolladin’s guards. Now they’re outlaws, forced to join the strange Englishmen on an escape mission through Manhattan. Their flight takes them into subways haunted by cannibals, into the arms of a sadistic cult in the city’s Meatpacking District, and, through the pages of their mom’s old journal, into the island’s dark and shocking past. Sky and Phee are dependent on each other, and their ragged posse, for survival, but as their feelings grow toward the handsome English boy Ryder, love and jealousy threaten to break them apart.
While primarily a thriller, City of Savages is also a story about the many meanings of sisterhood, told across two generations of New York women—those who survived a terrible tragedy, and those who were raised to live in its aftermath.

Monday Musing: NaNoWriMo is sucking out my soul!

You guys, I'm trying so hard to power through this month. NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is both super exciting and the hardest thing I ever do. However, I will say that the best part is the inspiration from the great writing community. Who knew that so many people get just as crazy weird as me on a regular basis?

Anyway, this is the main reason I am not posting that much this month, but I promise that my random thoughts and ramblings are still running through my head on a daily basis. I'm just failing on posting them.

In the meantime, I'll just put up these hilarious videos for you to watch:

Waiting on Wednesday: Distance Between Lost and Found by Kathryn Holmes

Breaking the Spine features a weekly event where we talk about the books we can't wait to read.

By: Kathryn Holmes
Release Date: February 17, 2015
Publisher: Harper Teen
Ever since the night of the incident with Luke Willis, the preacher’s son, sophomore Hallelujah Calhoun has been silent. When the rumors swirled around school, she was silent. When her parents grounded her, she was silent. When her friends abandoned her … silent.
Now, six months later, on a youth group retreat in the Smoky Mountains, Hallie still can’t find a voice to answer the taunting. Shame and embarrassment haunt her, while Luke keeps coming up with new ways to humiliate her. Not even meeting Rachel, an outgoing newcomer who isn’t aware of her past, can pull Hallie out of her shell. Being on the defensive for so long has left her raw, and she doesn’t know who to trust.
On a group hike, the incessant bullying pushes Hallie to her limit. When Hallie, Rachel, and Hallie’s former friend Jonah get separated from the rest of the group, the situation quickly turns dire. Stranded in the wilderness, the three have no choice but to band together.
With past betrayals and harrowing obstacles in their way, Hallie fears they’ll never reach safety. Could speaking up about the night that changed everything close the distance between being lost and found? Or has she traveled too far to come back?

This book interests me because I've been reading a lot of speculative fiction (and I'm not tired of that genre by any means) but I also like contemporary. This story has the grounding of contemporary and the fast pace thrill of speculative, so I am excited to read it when it comes out.

Top Ten Tuesday: Characters You Wish Would get their OWN Book

The Broke and the Bookish host a weekly meme of Top Ten Lists.

This week's question is:

Top Ten Characters You Wish Would Get Their OWN Book (minor or just maybe a semi main character you wish a book was from their POV)

Hagrid
Reason: He's so bumbling and awkward, but he's a great guy and he really takes care of Harry, Ron and Hermione. He's super loyal and he's pretty brave even though he's not as powerful as some of the other adult wizards in the series. Also, remember when everyone clapped for him at the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? So sweet!

Dee
Reason: The little sister of Daemon and Dawson, she's been through a lot, but she's still so sweet to Katy and is her first friend. Also, she's pretty powerful, but she doesn't let it get to her head too much. Also, I really want Dee to find love and be happy.

Seth
Reason: Is Seth good? Is Seth evil? Maybe we'll never find out. J/K we better find out or I will be super upset. (I'm pretty sure we find out). Anyway, I want to know why he seems like such a jerk and a sad puppy all at the same time (disclaimer: I kind of love those kinds of boy characters).

Brimstone
Reason: Since he is the noble father-figure for Karu, I liked him a lot. Since he was secretive and stoic, I was always very intrigued by him. He had to go through a lot seeing his people killed and having to lead a secret rebellion against an evil government (trying not to give too much away, can you tell?). Anyway, I would love to read a prequel book about how Brimstone became the way he is. Kind of like how we learned about Dumbledore in the 7th HP book.

Carswell Thorne
Reason: He's such an interesting character. He's kind of full of hot air, but he's also got heart, and that always helps make any character more likable. Plus, I really like his pairing with Cress.

Inigo Montoya
Reason: "My name is Inigo Montoya, this is my book, prepare to read." #nailedit

M
Reason: Because he was one of the first zombies (other than R) to feel human emotions (as is evident in his ability to have the stimulating conversation shown above). So I wonder what he was thinking/feeling and if it was just R that made him feel or something else?

Minho
Reason: Because he is the best! He's strong, brave, blunt, and has a good sense of humor. I would definitely read a whole book from his point of view.

Jackal
Reason: He's kind of a "bad guy" in this series, but there is some redemption for him. I would like to know how he got to be the way he is seeing as Kanin was also his sire and Kanin has such a strict moral compass. Or I would like to know where he goes after the series ends.

Sam
Reason: Sam is Ruby's bff in Thurmond, but because of Ruby's powers something not so good happens to Sam's mind. So, I would like to see what happens in Thurmond after Ruby leaves and how Sam copes with everything on her own. Also (and I'm only halfway through with In the Afterlight) I think she might be important in Ruby's bigger story...

Beautiful Books #2: How's the Writing Going?

Beautiful Books is a new linky hosted by Notebook Sisters and Further up and Further in.

[It is a] three-month-long blog event linkup focused on three different stages of writing: plotting, writing, and editing. It was designed with NaNoWriMo in mind.
They ask questions each month that we answer on our own blogs about the novels we plan to write (whether in NaNoWriMo or just on our own)

I AM doing it through NaNoWriMo, so if you want, let's be NaNo friends! You can find me here.

1. Be honest: how is your writing going?

Me when I first started NaNoWriMo:

Me a few days in when I realized I had no more ideas:

Me now:

So... I wrote a lot in the first week, and now I'm having major writer's block, so I've started writing a WHOLE NEW STORY. I'm the worst. But also, I'm happy I'm still writing something.

2. What’s your first sentence/paragraph?
First page of original WIP (Alien MG):

Let’s get a few things straight right off the bat: I’m not green, I don’t eat people, and I didn’t burst out of someone’s chest when I was born. Ew, seriously, humans can be really gross sometimes.

I am an alien.

I’m actually made of pure energy. You know, that stuff that powers your precious cars and computers. So, really, you should have welcomed my people with open arms.

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m trying my hand at what you humans call “journaling.”

No, that word sounds too casual for this. Let’s call this a guide. A guide for how to invade Earth in five easy...wait, eight easy...

Hold on--one, two, five, no that’s not a full step--okay, seven.

How to invade Earth in seven easy steps.

First page of new WIP (YA Superhero):

1: Vigilante

I’ve returned, back to the city of my birth and my death.

It’s everything I imagined and nothing like I’d dreamed at the same time.

The tall spires of the soaring skyscrapers stand majestically against the fog-filled night sky. The outlines of buildings are highlighted as lightning from an electrical storm lights the sky. Weather that fits my dark mood as I leap from roof-top to roof-top. I adjust my weight to compensate for the heavy winds from the southeast as I survey the crumbling brick facades of the slums of Aurum City.

This is where I came from, yet I don’t recognize any of the streets—not one loose brick, not one rusty fire escape, not one sagging laundry line.

I may have been born of Aurum City, but I haven’t stepped foot in it since I was an infant. Since I died.

Yet still, I came back to save it.

To avenge it.

And God help any who get in my way.

3. Do you have a book cover, and/or pictures that reflect your book?
Not yet for the Alien MG WIP.

For the YA Superhero, I have a pinterest that has one picture in it:

4. Do you have pictures of each of your characters? If not, describe them for us! (Be as descriptive as you can.)
Okay, I'm going to do this for just the Alien MG WIP since that is my main book:

Lex - his alien body is pure energy, so he describes it as a swarm of fireflies. His human body is a twelve-year-old Korean boy. He's slightly shorter than average, with black hair and brown eyes.

Toby - he's also 12. He has brown hair that is always standing on end because he's always running nervous hands through it. He is Lex's height.

Divya - she is also 12, she's taller than both Lex and Toby with black hair and tan/brown skin.

5. What scene are you most excited to write?
An escape scene, this is actually all I have for ideas for this scene so far. But I know when I figure it out, it'll be epic.

6. Share a snippet or a scene that you really enjoyed writing.

Alien MG:

I awoke in my new human body on a Tuesday.

Based on my observations, I have determined that Tuesdays are probably the worst days of the Earth week (contrary to the popular belief that Mondays are the worst).

The reason I say that Tuesday is the worst day of the week is because it is not the beginning of the week nor the end, it is not even the popularly termed “hump day” that marks the middle. The only reason that Tuesday beats Thursday as the worst is that Thursday signals that the next day is Friday, an observed favorite based on the many coffee mugs and restaurants thanking God that it is Friday.

Anyway, almost nothing ever happens on a Tuesday. So, when a twelve-year-old comatose boy suddenly woke up, all humans in the general vicinity became very interested in the event.

The first time I awoke, the loud beep of machines alerted many humans in pastel clothing who came running into the room.

“I have come as a representative of the Alacran fleet. You may present me with your gifts,” I said.

Or, at least, I tried to say that. It came out more as, “Arggggghwaaah.”

Superhero YA:

The sun dips lower in the sky, bleeding in the dark waters. The sea churns, turning inky black, absorbing the rays of the sun. Stealing the heat from the air. I almost expect the sun to become stained black from it. Like if I could somehow lift the red orb from the horizon it would come away dripping in black. Forever stained. Or maybe I think that because this is what has happened with my soul. At some point it was dipped in a darkness that has forever permeated it, turning it black, and nothing can scrub it clean.

Except.

As I think this I see disappointed eyes flash through my head. They are not the eyes of my father, not the eyes that I am so used to looking for when I need guidance. They are her eyes. Eyes that seem bright despite their inky color. Could it be possible? That something so dark could be so vivid? Could it be that there is hope yet for my stained soul?

7. Now that you're writing, have any of the plot details, or the process itself, turned out different from what you planned or imagined?
I kind of realized that some of the details I wanted to include will just confuse the story, I need to keep it a little simpler than I had originally planned in order to keep the voice and the characters at the forefront.

8. Is there a character or aspect of your plot that's difficult to write?
Lex is both fun and super difficult to write. Sometimes I have his voice down exactly and others I have no idea how he would describe something. So frustrating!

9. What’s your favorite aspect of this novel so far? Favorite character?
Favorite aspect is that I can point out how ridiculous people can be because Lex doesn't understand human behavior. Therefore Lex is my favorite character.

10. Have you drawn off of any life experiences or people you know to create your novel and your characters?
of course, I have ridiculous friends and family.

11. Do you have a playlist or certain song for your novel and/or characters?
Soundtracks, currently listening to How To Train Your Dragon. I think one of my CPs suggested it...

12. Let’s have some fun for a moment: imagine you are somehow transported into your book’s world. Which character are you most likely to be found hanging out with?
My main characters: Lex, Toby, and Divya. I wrote them based on some of my own friends from elementary and middle school.

13. How do you keep yourself motivated to finish your daily wordcount? (Pinterest? Internet breaks? Chocolate?)
Good ol' fashioned guilt for not meeting word count. And the drive to finish and hopefully get published :)

14. What inspiring quote keeps you writing?
Anything said by Chuck Wendig

15. How does this book make you feel so far? Are you laughing? Crying? Frustrated?
I have to be honest, I am super frustrated right now. I can't figure out how to get past this midpoint I'm at. Whyyyyy?!

However, with my new WIP, I'm pretty inspired, haha. So I love writing my new MS, but I hate that I'm not finishing the first one...

And if you're in the mood to hear about my "new" book. I've re-answered the questions from the first linky of Beautiful Books with that new novel in mind:

1. What came first: characters or plot idea? Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Character, I thought of the main male protagonist first. I'm a pantser, but for this book I had to become a plotter since there is a very complicated backstory and a conspiracy that gets uncovered as the book goes on.

2. Do you have a title and/or a “back-cover-blurb”?
No title, but a little bit of a back-cover-blurb/query:

He died once to protect the city with a lie, now he has returned to avenge the city with the truth. However, the mysterious vigilante who haunts the streets doesn’t know what hits him when he runs into Addy Jang.

A practical girl with no time for games and nonsense, Addy Jang does not believe in superheroes. She is too busy following her ten-year plan to become the city’s top defense lawyer. She plans on making a difference like her politician father.

After landing a high school internship at a non-profit legal center, Addy’s first big case is a high profile class action lawsuit against the biggest corporation in the city, the ARC Group. As she digs deeper into the dirty past of the organization, she keeps coming face to face with the masked boy who roams the city. Addy does not approve of any one person taking the law into their own hands. However, as she slowly unveils a conspiracy that involves ARC, the governor’s office, and even her own father, the vigilante might be the only one who can help her uncover the truth. Now Addy is determined to figure out who this masked avenger is, and she starts to realize that his mild alter ego might be someone she already knows.

3. What wordcount are you aiming for when your novel is finished?
It's a YA novel (don't know exact genre yet, maybe light sci-fi?) so it'll be around 70,000 words.

4. Sum up your novel in 3 sentences.
Comic from Lois Lane POV.

Revenge for sins of the past.

What do you call justice when you take it into your own hands?

5. Sum up your characters in one word each.
Vigilante - haunted

Addy - driven

Charlie - Charming

Remy - OCD

Wade - slacker

Victor Axtell - Powerful

Harvey Bonham - Trustworthy

6. Which character are you most excited to write? Tell us about them!
Probably Addy and the Vigilante (the chapters when you don't know his secret identity yet)

7. What about your villain? Who is he, what is his goal?
Victor Axtell is the big villian, he is the CEO of the ARC Group and it's parent company Axtell Incorporated. He thinks he's above the law because he is so rich and powerful.

8. What is your protagonist’s goal? And what stands in the way?
The Vigilante wants to get justice for something that happened to his family years ago.

Addy wants to do good for the city and become a lawyer so she can make a difference.

9. What inciting incident begins your protagonist’s journey?
The vigilante comes to town and Addy gets her first big case as an intern at a law firm that takes on a case against ARC.

10. Where is your novel set?
Aurum City (probably in America, but it's not specified exactly where it is).

11. What are three big scenes in your novel that change the game completely?
Addy gets to work on the case against ARC and meets the vigilante.

Addy gets attacked on the street by someone working for ARC.

Addy eventually finds out what the vigilante's identity is.

12. What is the most dynamic relationship your character has? Who else do they come in contact with or become close to during the story?
Probably the relationship between Addy and the vigilante before she knows who he really is.

13. How does your protagonist change by the end of the novel?
She realizes that not everything/everyone is completely good or bad. There is a lot of grey area, but doing good is still important.

14. Do you have an ending in mind, or do you plan to see what happens?
Yes, I have an ending in mind and I've mapped it out with an outline.

15. What are your hopes and dreams for your book? What impressions are you hoping this novel will leave on your readers and yourself?
I hope I can keep the vigilante's identity a secret through most of the novel while still giving little clues. It's like a mystery novel, but it has a superhero in it.
